Summer Activities
As we approach the end of the school year, remember that education doesn’t stop when the summer break begins. For example, Mesquite ISD Community Education and the City of Mesquite offer summer courses, workshops and activities that keep children learning while they are having fun. Perhaps the best summer activity to keep our brains sharp is reading for pleasure or reading to your very young children – even those who have not yet entered kindergarten. Please take a moment to respond to this blog entry by sharing ways that you encourage your own children to keep learning throughout the summer months.

Poteet High School is taking care of summer reading for my son. He will be a Freshman there in August. He has an assigned book to read, "The Book Thief." I was able to find it in audio form. That has been fun for him to listen and read.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your input. It is always nice to hear that students have read good literature during the summer.
ReplyDeleteAnnotation of texts should be removed from the curriculum of Honors/AP classes because there is nothing that the student can gain from it. Annotating while reading a significant novel pulls the student out of the book and takes from the student the ability to read in depth the assigned reading because he/she is constantly having to remove him/herself from the text to write comments in the margins.
ReplyDeleteI recently read Rafe Esquith's book, "Teach Like Your Hair Is On Fire." I love his approach on encouraging his students to become "readers for life." One of the ways he does this is by being one.
